Meadham Kirchoff

It’s 5pm on a Friday before the country shuts down for a four day Royal Diamond Jubilee extravaganza. Short of an IV drip of vodka and a Mr Whippy-dispensing ice cream van outside the front door, I’m hard put to think of a better reason to knock off early than watching Meadham Kirchoff’s dancers, a cross between Bacchante and Courtney Love, get frisky in-store at Topshop’s flagship at Oxford Circus.

I knew what to expect, having seen their legendary (and I do not use that world lightly) SS12 show, the highlight of which (for me & many) was seeing one of the dancers flash Anna Wintour on the front row. Anyway. Moving on.

Dominique & I arrived to scenes of chaos: word had clearly got around, and the store was rammed, overflowing out onto the pavement. Bang on 5pm, the dance troupe came tripping down the store’s main escalators  – which was the first clue that this wasn’t a regular fashion show, to God Save the Queen by the Sex Pistols, and Wannabe by the Spice Girls.

There was a lot of flashing of Union flag knickers as they danced down to the Oxford Street front window where they drew back a gold glittering curtain to reveal an impressive giant cake protected by yellow mohawked, corset-clad acolytes waving feather fans.

The baby ballerina of SS12 rotating on the cake was replaced by Britannia carrying a blue, white and red glitter shield and pink glitter fork, who appeared from the cake in an explosion of confetti cannon, and a soundtrack of Rule Britannia and God Save the Queen.

I even spotted a tiny smile hovering at the corner of Ed Meadham’s mouth. Tiny, but still there, I promise.

All in all a pretty satisfactory replacement for that end of week ice cream/vodka fantasy.

I suggest heading down over the next few days (the Meadham Kirchoff extravaganza continues until the 5th). Customers will receive a Meadham Kirchhoff-designed crown with every purchase, and will be given the chance to win a Meadham Kirchhoff Jubilee glitter tee and a £500 shopping spree if they tweet a picture of themselves wearing the crown mentioning @Topshop

Meadham Kirchhoff-clad usherettes will be giving out complimentary sweet treats including multicoloured candy floss, pink glitter popcorn and rainbow millions, and customers can head to the Topshop make-up area on the ground floor where they can enjoy their very own Meadham Kirchhoff-inspired Jubilee face art. Four limited edition t-shirts will also be on sale, one of which will feature red glitter hearts, and another all-over silver tinsel.
